Few bands in recent years have emerged from the Emerald Isle with as much potential as Moth Complex. Mixing Curve-style soundscapes with the melodies of The Gathering and post-Tarja Nightwish, this is a band to keep a close eye on. Stunning stuff.
MOTH COMPLEX - Myspace tracks reviewed
Moth Complex came to the attention of NM via our man in Dublin, the Big H, highly recommended and under orders to review 'em as soon as possible. We promised we would, and here's the long-promised article!
Moth Complex, female-fronted, Dublin-based, and heavily reminiscent of British 90's electronic-techrock band Curve. Now, that's a band well-liked here at Noise HQ, although they had their iffy moments. Moth Complex, however, echo Curve at their very best, a soundscape of melody and vocals that melt you in ways you never knew you could melt.
There's 5 tracks on their Myspace right now, and I've got 'em on repeat plays as I write this. "Tied Up In Knots" is a bittersweet piece of electronic rock, perfect melodics complemented by Aoife O'Leary's powerful yet gentle voice, all blended in a song that will have you hitting the replay over and over and over. "Learned My Lesson (remix)" lets them down a bit, the distorted beats and broken resampled vocal irritating rather than sounding cool. It's the only song that doesn't work so well for us. "Scar Of A Healed Wound", is a slow laidback affair that spells chillout in any language, taking you on a slow drive through the first half of the song until the second kicks it up a notch into a heavier beat with howling guitar before dropping you into that comfy fridge from the first half again for a final chillout to the end.
"Learn My Lesson Well" is an upbeat and powerful song, a perfect fusion of rock and electronica and opening the floodgates for Aoife to take a more agressive stance at the mic stand.
MOTH COMPLEX - "Stronger Inside" live
Overall, Moth Complex don't disapppoint - with the exception of that remix which is a bit of an acquired taste - and in the current rock climate there's definitely both the room and the need for a band with this style and confidence. Go see 'em if you get the chance, but click the linkage and play 'em loud right now.
